Recently, I booked a last minute trip with a girlfriend to Marrakesh. After having traveled there in 2015, I have dreamt of going back ever since. There are non-stop flights from Nice to Marrakesh, but unfortunately they don’t run daily in the wintertime. To get there, I had a layover in Madrid, which was an easy and pleasant place to stop. Upon arrival in Marrakesh, I was pleasantly surprised with the new airport renovations that were completed in the fall of 2016.
My flight actually landed ahead of schedule, so checking in through passport control took less than 5 minutes. My luggage arrived quickly, and once I gathered it, I then waited for my friend to arrive. There’s free wifi at the airport, which is always a bonus. Her flight arrived only 30 minutes after mine, but landed at the same time as three other flights. She experienced long queues at passport control. The airport staff seemed to still be working on improving the flight arrival process and handling large groups passing through the immigration line. After she got her luggage, which was already on the carousel, we took a van transfer provided by the hotel.
From the airport, it was a thirty-minute drive to the hotel. On arrival, we were warmly greeted by the staff at reception. We were famished so we decided to have a late lunch by the pool before we were escorted to our villa, which is the best choice if you’re staying at Tigmiza!
Each villa has it’s own garden with a pool. When you enter your villa, you will see a guest bathroom, then further along a large living room/dining room that opens up to an outdoor deck, which is where we enjoyed our customary mint tea. We stayed in Villa number 7 and they’re all decorated differently.
There’s a cozy bed in an alcove adjoining the living room – a great place for children to sleep and a curtain provides privacy. The master suite is on the second floor, there is access to a private balcony. The master bathroom offers a large, luxurious tub and a shower room. Everything was comfortable and relaxing, and quite opulent, which explains our great enjoyment of these luxurious accommodations.
The hotel also offers shuttles to the city center twice daily: one for morning excursions and one for nighttime outings. We decided to go into town that night, and we booked the shuttle: all you need to do is reserve seats in advance so that they’re aware of how many people are needing a ride. On this trip into the city, we decided to have drinks at La Mamounia. La Mamounia Palace Hotel is the most iconic hotel of Marrakesh and a great place for drinks. It dates back to the 12th century and is full of history and memorable stories, making it the perfect spot for learning more about Marrakesh.
We returned to our oasis and had a great night’s sleep, because even though there was no time change, we were still tired from traveling. The next morning, I woke up to the sounds of the birds singing. It’s quite a treat to wake up with an amazing view of the desert from your balcony. We chose to have the hotel breakfast, it’s a nice mix of European and Moroccan cuisine. I really enjoyed the Moroccan breakfast that was cooked out on the veranda, especially the semolina pancakes with honey.
We had a chance to tour the different room categories and the rest of the property. If you’re celebrating a special day, then the Royal Suite is what you’re looking for. It boasts its own spa and hammam, and the luxurious villa offers total privacy for your special stay.
I very much enjoyed my stay away from the hustle and bustle of the city center. I didn’t have the chance to swim in the pools because it was cool weather, especially at night. Morocco is very safe and a beautiful country with so much to offer. I will be back, Morocco!
